Buying From The Real Real

The Real Real was the first website I ever came across that sold pre-owned luxury fashion. I was still in college and definitely not able to afford buying any clothing, let alone luxury, so actually buying anything from the site was kind of out of the question. Still, stumbling upon a site like that was the first time that I felt that buying luxury fashion could be in my future. Fast forward about 7 years and I’m obsessed with the site.

The Real Real is a pre-owned luxury website that also has a few brick-and-mortar locations in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. All of their items come authenticated and checked for quality, which is super important when dealing with luxury goods.

The Shopping Experience

Shopping The Real Real is super easy. They have tons of filters so you can narrow your search down by size, condition, price, and brand. I ended up finding an amazing pair of Saint Laurent suede boots in pristine condition. Originally, these boots were in the $1000-$1500 price range, but I ended up paying less than $300 including shipping.

When someone sells something on The Real Real, it has already been sent to one of the store’s offices where it’s authenticated, photographed, and put into their inventory. Because they’re in physical possession of the piece, you don’t have to worry that photos aren’t accurate or that the item won’t ever be shipped out.

The Buying Experience

The Real Real does offer financing through Affirm if you fall in love with a piece that is still a little bit out of your price range. While I’ve used Affirm to finance large furniture purchases, I’ve actually never used it on a clothing site.

As far as the shipping goes, The Real Real is able to compete with the shipping times from regular department stores because they’ve already authenticated the item and have it in their possession.

My shoes arrived via UPS in about a week. The only thing I didn’t like was that they didn’t require a signature for my delivery. While that may not be as big of a deal when you’re dealing with $300 shoes, if I were to purchase a Saint Laurent jacket for $2000, I would definitely want a signature to be required.

The Product

These shoes are amazing, and I’m not even exaggerating. They really were “Pristine” as listed in the description of the item. There wasn’t a single mark on them, including the soles. They came in a The Real Real dust bag instead of a box, but I’m not someone who stores shoes in their original boxes so that didn’t really bother me.

Overall, I loved buying from The Real Real. They’re definitely going to be one of my main sources for pre-owned luxury fashion in the future.

My Favorite FW20 Trends

Fall is the best time for fashion. It’s when all the luxe materials like leather, velvet, and wool come out. And the rest of the fashion world agrees with me (have you ever seen how thick the September issue of Vogue is?). Despite the chaos going on in the world right now, FW20 trends are still happening and I’m loving them.

I took a look at some of the upcoming trends for this fall/winter season and picked out my favorites that I will definitely be rocking this year.

Leather/Faux Leather

Leather is always on trend for the colder months, which is why a leather jacket will never go out of style. For FW20, you’ll see more than just leather jackets, though.

Leather skirts, tops, and dresses are going to be must-have items this season. You’ll also find leathers in a lot of colors and patters besides your standard blacks and browns. I love a good oxblood leather jacket or a snake print leather skirt.

Obviously, if you prefer not to wear leather, you can always opt to rock this trend with faux leather instead. Nanushka has some really great faux leather pieces.

70s Revival

One of my favorite FW20 trends is the 70s revival trend. Sure, the 70s have been back in style for a while, but they were replaced by the 80s during the last couple of seasons. I blame Stranger Things. I’m personally not as big of a fan of 80s fashion as 70s fashion, so I’m glad to see my favorite decade is back.

Whether you’re a bohemian rock n’ roller or a disco queen, all the trends of the 70s are going to be back this season. You’ll want to look out for muted colors, 70s-inspired tailoring, and rich materials like suede, velvet, and corduroy. Scarves, belts, and oversized sunglasses will be killer accessories.

Statement Sleeves

I’m so happy that statement sleeves are going to be on-trend this season. I’ve always been a huge fan of statement sleeves. Honestly, the bolder the better when it comes to sleeves. You really can’t go too wild.

For a more feminine take on statement sleeves, look for ruffles, bows, and balloon sleeves. For a more edgy take on them, look for bell sleeves, embellishments, and even distressed sleeves.

Fringe

If 70s revival is trending for this season, then obviously fringe will too. Fringe is a great way to add movement and excitement to a look. It’s actually super diverse and can be used as a minimalist accent or a statement finish.

If you’re nervous that fringe might be a little too wild, you can always pair it with an all-black outfit to tone everything down. Really, fringe should be the centerpiece to your look anyways since it’s pretty hard for other pieces to compete with it.

Cool Collars

I’ve never really played with exciting collars on my shirts too much, but it looks like this season is going to be my chance. For a bold approach to this trend, you can look for tops with super dramatic and ornate collars. For a more wearable and understatement approach, you can opt for a bright or patterned collared shirt under a neutral blazer or coat.

Tiger Queen

Let me state, for the record, that I loved tiger print way before I binge-watched Tiger King. I’ve got a tiger print outdoor rug on my balcony, tiger print pillows on my couch, and multiple pieces of tiger print clothing. Some people think tiger print is tacky, but it’s tacky in all of the right ways.

Since we’ve been in quarantine, I haven’t really worn much besides sweats and oversized tees. But taking a day to pick out a cute outfit and do my hair and makeup does help me feel human again. I’m now finding myself getting dressed up for my daily walk to my mailbox.

I thrifted this cool Harley Davidson top from Wang’s Vintage in downtown Phoenix. I did a little DIY and turned it into more of a muscle tee. I tucked my top into some cuffed skinny jeans from Frame with a super cute button fly. If you’re ever looking for skinny jeans that don’t feel as basic, look for ones with a button fly. Trust me on this one.

I finished the look off with some gold bangles and tiger print boots from Kenneth Cole. These boots have some more western styling with silver metal tips. I really love little details like that. They may seem small, but they really make the piece feel more well thought out and high end.
