I am officially 22 and I got a tattoo as my present! Getting a new tattoo was definitely long overdue since I hadn’t gotten a proper one (other than a tiny random impulse tattoo) in about a year and I had been itching to get one for a long time.
It took me a while to finally figure out what I wanted to get. I wanted to keep my tattoos somewhat feminine, but not too girly so I figured something floral in black and grey would be nice. My favorite flowers are sunflowers and roses. I figured a black and grey sunflower wouldn’t really have the effect I wanted so I decided to go with a rose. It took me a while to figure out a design that I liked that wasn’t going to be heavy and traditional or cliche and overdone.
Ultimately, I went with the silhouette of a rose from the cover of Depeche Mode’s album Violator. I fell in love with Depeche Mode my sophomore year of high school. That was the year I really fell in love with the older goth/new wave bands like The Cure and Joy Division (which I also have a tattoo of).
The tattoo turned out great. I was introduced to a tattoo artist named Justin Hobbs at Dana Point Tattoo in Dana Point, CA. I wasn’t looking forward to having a larger piece on my back done, but he had such a light hand and was so precise that it was definitely the easiest tattoo I’ve gotten. He flew through the outline and, even though my tattoo is solid black, he didn’t have to keep going over the same raw skin over and over again. It healed perfectly and I don’t even need to get it touched up, which is pretty rare when it comes to solid black tattoos.
I’m so happy with the tattoo and I definitely will be having Justin do my future work.
